Mini Series: What makes the PHitW project so sustainable

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

This week we embarked on a little mini-series, highlighting 5 reasons why the Passive House in the Woods project is a sustainable project.

The leapfrog design of the Passive House in the Woods is based on integrated design and the holistic idea of building and living. Gary approached us with a vision of carbon-neutral, low impact building. That in itself does not sound like much. But we quickly realized how serious he is about it, and embraced the idea by assembling and leading a team of experts to deliver on all fronts of sustainability.

Passive House in the Woods Update

Passive House in the Woods, south east perspective

Josh Crenshaw of Morr Construction wrote a very nice little blog post on his impressions of the project as a site supervisor. You can find it at http://www.passivehouseinthewoods.com/

Over the course of the last month, we posted a number of updates that illustrate progress on site, as well as some of the design solutions for this high-performance home. Make sure to visit often, or follow Passive House in the Woods on Twitter at http://twitter.com/phitw

The building shell is almost complete at this point. It’s still wearing a skirt of tarps to protect the excavation around it. We look forward to exterior insulation and windows within the next two months. These items will help complete the shape of the building. We are looking to offer tours of the construction site—potentially in May or June. We’ll make an announcement once we have a firm date. Stay tuned.

Appleseed House one step closer to reality

Friday, November 14th, 2008

During last night’s neighborhood board meeting, the Hawthorne neighborhood passed a motion to collaborate with the minneAppleseed Association on a passive solar house for the Eco Village. This is great progress and means that the Appleseed House Project is one step closer to reality.
I produced an Appleseed House Project flyer I made in case you would like to read up on the project. You can download it here. 2008-11-13_appleseed-flyer

Work on the Appleseed Project continues

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Tonight, minneAppleseed present once again at a Hawthorne Neighborhood Council Housing Committee meeting. Over the last few weeks we have done research into available lots and analyzed the texture of the four blocks that comprise the Eco Village in North Minneapolis. For more information, click this link to read the minneAppleseed blog.

Hawthorne Neighborhood approves cooperation with MinneAppleseed

Thursday, October 2nd, 2008

In a unanimous vote at last night’s housing committee meeting, North Minneapolis’ Hawthorne neighborhood agreed to partner with MinneAppleseed to build a Passive House. The committee vowed to work with MinneAppleseed on the design. The next steps are now to find and secure a lot, and start design in earnest. This important step puts MinneAppleseed and the Appleseed House on track for a 2009 groundbreaking.
I would like to extend my thanks to the housing committee for being open-minded and embracing MinneAppleseed’s ideas for North Minneapolis. I look forward to working with them.

Eco Village in North Minneapolis

Wednesday, August 20th, 2008

I had the opportunity to tour the site of the North Minneapolis Eco Village in the Hawthorne neighborhood today. In lieu of a MinneAppleseed blog at this point I just want to post a link to the project on this website. This is one potential site for the Appleseed House.

minneAppleseed website “planted”

Friday, August 8th, 2008

minneAppleseed is the group of do-gooders behind the Appleseed House project. Their website just launched, though still with a coming-soon message on it. Keep an eye on it as it will be following the efforts surrounding the Appleseed House and the community efforts that “grow” around it.
